Filipino war veterans to get double benefits
By. Bernadette E. Tamayo - TONIGHT
AFTER waiting for more than 50 years, Filipino soldiers who fought alongside the Americans during the World War II will be permitted to receive benefits from both the Philippine and the U.S. governments.
The Senate passed on third reading Tuesday night Senate Bill 142, amending the Veterans Law which allows Filipino veterans currently residing in the country to received their pensions from both Manila and Washington.
Authored by Sen. Richard Gordon, the bill will benefit more than half of the estimated 16,000 surviving World War II veterans or their surviving spouses residing in the Philippines.
Around 142,000 Filipinos fought during the war 60,000 of whom suffered through the infamous Death March in Bataan together with 10,000 Americans.
About 7,000 Filipino non-services connected (non-combat injuries) WWII veterans in the U.S. and some 13,000 counterparts in the Philippines are expected to benefit from this bill once it becomes a law.
The proposed bill will amend Section 10 of Republic Act No. 6984 also known as “An Act Standardizing and Upgrading the Benefits for Military Veterans and Their Dependents.”
