Happy days here again for smugglers, says resigned anti-smuggling group head
Happy days are here again for smugglers following the resignation of Undersecretary Antonio “Bebot” Villar Jr. as head of the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG).
Villar made this declaration this in a phone interview with The STAR today where he confirmed that he sending his resignation letter to President Arroyo today amidst calls from a handful of congressmen calling for the disbandment of PASG. This came about after Villar allegedly snubbed the invitation of the House Committee on Good Government on their hearings about the smuggling in the country.
Villar said he is making a supreme sacrifice to give up his post so as not to add burden to the President who is already beset with so many problems.
"“But my loyalty to the President still remains no matter what happens. That will never change,"” he said. He vowed “not to leave the President, but only his position”.
He said he is elated with the "full trust and confidence" given him by the President who created PASG in May 21, 2007. She appointed him as its chief as well as the concurrent head of Task Force Subic at the Subic Freeport last Dec. 28, 2007.
Villar is he is sad, adding that it is ironic that while the opposition praises him for his big accomplishments in going after smugglers, there are administration congressmen who are bent on kicking him out of his post. - Eva Visperas - PhilStar
