A little Subic in Tagum soon
Davao City -- A banana haven since 1960s, the newly-converted industrial zone of the Hijo Plantation is now designed to be a little Subic of the South.
The 760 hectare land left for industrial conversion started renovation since September of last year and continues to be realized as the city government of Tagum continue to assists in the investment promotions.
At the heart of a busy business district of Tagum City hides a vast property of Jesus Ayala that boasts of a pristine forest, blue waters, rich animal wildlife, a gateway for a river cruise, a window of the banana industry.
"I never knew that Tagum has this beautiful, complete, and attractive tourist spot that could be a perfect package for anyone who wants to mix business and pleasure. All I could think if asked about this city is only banana," said one media practitioner who joined the launching of the Lanikai-Madaum River Cruise.
Long built since 1920's with American settlers, the plantation was planted with abaca until it was sold to the Tuazons and Ayalas in the 1960's who then turned the property into a banana plantation.
In the 1990's, about 1,000 hectares of the land was turned into the hands of the tenants as the property qualified under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.
After seeing the potentials of the property, the owner finally decided to convert it into an industrial estate that will soon be offered as a complete tour package.
"We are now working out to make the place as an economic zone where one could find just about everything in this part of Tagum, that would range from business opportunities as well as tourism," said John Sison, Tourism and Leisure Manager of Lanikai Resort.
The owner starts the big plan with the renovation of Lanikai Resort or heaven by the sea in Hawaiian. It offers huge rooms for overnight stay, a beach which is just steps away from the resort hotel, various amenities like a basketball court, tennis court and others.
The property will soon have an 18 hole golf course, a clubhouse, a wellness farm, a lighthouse tower and restaurant, and many more.
The plan includes the support of the city government in assisting the owner in establishing land transport terminal, fire and police station, a utility park, training center, commercial center, and other establishments in the surrounding community.
At present, the city government assists in the promotion of the Lanikai-Madaum River Cruise that starts the tour from the Lanikai Resort as you get the feel of a relaxed morning along the beach, take a look of the wildlife in the 100 hectare forest, cruise through the Madaum River with centuries-old mangroves at the side, witness crab culture in one of the many crab parks along the river, and finally enjoy a stop-over in a Kalagan Village where the Muslim settlers will entertain you with their songs and dance and offer their native coffee and Amik, or a Muslim delicacy made of rice.
From beach, sports facilities, nature trip in the forest and river, culture exposure... all these are offered in one setting. (By Mai Gevera - PIA)
