SCTEx opening seen to boost tourism

The opening today of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) will give the tourism industry in Central Luzon a big boost as it provides a faster, more convenient travel to and from Subic and Clark, an executive of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said yesterday.

During a discussion with members of the Greater Clark Visitors’ Bureau, SCTEX Program Manager Robert Gervacio said the Subic-Clark segment of the expressway which will be opened by President Arroyo this morning will provide tourists better access to the Subic Bay Freeport in Zambales and the Clark Freeport in Pampanga from Metro Manila and Northern Luzon.

SCTEX is very near the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) through a two-kilometer spur road and interchange in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

"By providing this fast, convenient access to both Subic and Clark from all the major points in Luzon, including Metro Manila and Baguio, more travelers will be encouraged to visit Central Luzon where there are top entertainment and relaxation destinations," Gervacio said.

"Visitors who wish to stay in Subic and other resorts in Zambales, for instance, can easily take a 45-minute trip to Clark via the SCTEX and return on the same day. Those who are staying in the Clark area can always visit resorts in Zambales and be back in their hotels the same day without much hassle," Gervacio added.

The BCDA executive noted that tourists from Northen Luzon provinces such as La Union and Pangasinan can now travel to Central Luzon more frequently because of the shorter travel time and excellent road condition.

"And let us not forget our locators and employees in the special economic zones in Subic and Clark who live near their places of work. They can now plan their weekends, or even overnight getaways, in destinations that have suddenly become accessible through the SCTEX," he added.

Gervacio said that the BCDA expects the SCTEX, the country’s longest tollway at 94 kilometers, to create more job opportunities not only in the ecozones but in many service-related industries as well, especially with the planned integration of Subic and Clark to create a strategic international logistics hub in the Asia-Pacific Region.

With the Subic-Clark segment of the SCTEX now open, Gervacio said the President’s vision of a Subic-Clark corridor is now a reality and that Central Luzon would soon be competing against the likes of Hong Kong and Singapore.

"But we could be better than our competitors, and our destinations are definitely more beautiful," Gervacio told members of the Greater Clark Visitors Bureau, which is composed of travel and hotel professionals in Central Luzon.

The 50.5-kilometer Subic-Clark segment of the SCTEX will be opened by President Arroyo today and will be tollfree during the Holy Week, starting at 1 p.m. today until Monday. (Jun Velasco - Manila Bulletin)
