SUBIC-CLARK EXPRESSWAY OPENS FOR HOLYWEEK
Olongapo City Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. participated in the launching of the week-long dry run of the 50-kilometer Subic-Clark portion of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) led by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on March 18, 2008.
Together with Olongapo First Lady and Zambales Vice Governor Anne Marie Gordon, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Administrator Armand C. Arreza and SBMA Chairman Feliciano Salonga, Mayor Gordon joined other officials from the different provinces, towns and cities in Central Luzon in the ceremonial launching of the Subic-Clark Highway dry run aptly dubbed as “Handog ni Pangulong Gloria: Libreng Biyahe sa SCTEX.”
President Arroyo led a convoy from Clark Logistic Interchange in Brgy. Mabiga, Mabalacat, Pampanga to Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ).
After the ceremonial launching of the dry run, the toll road opened to type 1 vehicles, chartered buses and motorcycles. Starting Tuesday up to Monday, the toll road will be opened from 5:30am to 5:30 pm.
According to Mayor Gordon, the dry run of the Subic Clark segment is ideal for motorists bound for Olongapo, SBFZ, and Zambales during the Lenten season. The mayor likewise added that the opening of SCTEX will not only shorten travel time by more than half but will also spur further development in Olongapo City and SBFZ’s economy.
“Tourist can easily now go to the beaches and other tourist attractions of Olongapo City, Subic Freeport and Zambales,” Mayor Gordon said.
A trip from Clark to Subic through SCTEX would only take about thirty (30) minutes compared to the almost three hours of journey using the Jose Abad Santos Avenue (JASA). From NLEX in Balintawak to Subic, travel time will be cut to one hour and thirty minutes.
The 93.77 kilometer SCTEX is divided into two major sections – the 50.5km long Subic-Clark section and the 43.27 km. long Clark-Tarlac section. The SCTEX is a flagship project of President Arroyo and is among the mega-projects intended to transform Central and Northern Luzon into a super region.
