NDCC: Cosme toll reaches 37; damages exceed P3B
The devastation of tropical storm "Cosme" appeared worse than expected as situation reports from affected provinces started to arrive, with the death toll now reaching 37 and damages estimated at over P3 billion.
In its latest bulletin, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) on Wednesday said aside from the 37 fatalities, 16 other people were injured while a person remains missing after rains brought by the storm triggered floodings, landslides, and storm surge in northern and southern Luzon regions and Western Visayas.
NDCC said most of the fatalities were from Region 1 (Ilocos Region) - one of the areas that was hardest-hit by the storm - where 34 people perished in the storm. Two fatalities were from Region 3 (Central Luzon), while 1 was from the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR).
Aside from the fatalities, 7 people were injured in CAR, 5 other from Region 1 while 4 were also hurt in Region 3.
The lone remaining person was from Region 1, NDCC noted.
In its bulletin, NDCC said estimated damage to properties have reached P3.4 billion in four regions - including Regions 1, 3, 6 and CAR.
Agriculture was hardest-hit, with damages amounting to P3.32 billion, NDCC said. Damage to school buildings was likewise extensive, with estimated damages placed at P149.66 million.
NDCC said damage to other infrastructures were estimated at P19.23 million.
The agency noted that the storm totally destroyed 22,816 houses and partially damaged 51,932 houses in these Regions 1, 3, 4, 6, and CAR leading to the displacement of 182,930 families or slightly over 1 million persons in these regions.
Aid in form of rice distribution and relief operations have started to pour into affected areas with the much-improved weather in the past few days which has also allowed most of the residents to start rebuilding. - GMANews.TV
