Gonzales beats Sadorra, gains solo lead at Subic Chess
Chess Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales outdueled IM Julio Catalino Sadorra in an all-Filipino battle gain solo lead after four rounds in the 2008 Subic Open international chess championship at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention center.
A report posted on Sportsnews.com said Gonzales used the white pieces to his advantage to defeat Sadorra in 40 moves of the Slav.
With the win, Gonzales now has 4 points to lead the nine-round tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
His next opponent is 14-year-old GM Wesley So, who holds solo second place with 3.5 points after winning over Rolando Andador.
Twelve players, led by top seed GM Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine and GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia, share third to 14th places with 3 points.
Kuzubov beat FM Aawm Wahomo of Indoneisa, while Megaranto defeated IM Hafizulhelmi Mas of Malaysia.
Also among those who scored 3 points are IM Zaw Htun Wynn of Maynmar, NM Emmanuel Senador, IM John Paul Gomez, IM Richard Bitoon, NM Rolando Nolte and IM Sadikin Irwanto of Indonesia.
In other matches, GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. beat Merben Roque; Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre scored a draw with Anjas Novita of Indonesia; and GM Buenaventura "Bong" Vilamayor split the point with FM Roderick Nava.
