Pinoys share lead in Subic chess open

International Master (IM) Julio Catalino "Ino" Sadorra continued his run at the 2008 Subic Open International Chess Championship by beating IM Zaw Htun Wynn of Myanmar at Sunday’s match held in Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center.

A report posted on Sportsnews.ph said the Grandmaster (GM)-candidate Sadorra now shares the lead with GM-elect Jayson Gonzales with a perfect score of 3 points after the third round of the competition.

Sadorra also hurdled his first two matches against Xu Tong of China in the first round and compatriot Hamed Nouri in the second round. He is the highest-placed Filipino in the recently concluded Philippine Open.

"Medyo inspirado ngayon, lalo na maganda yung performance ko sa nakaraang Philippine Open," said the 22-year-old Sadorra.

Gonzales also posted his third consecutive victory when he defeated returning GM Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor.

He also beat Jan Emmanuel Garcia in the first round and Wahono Awan of Indonesia in the second round.

In other matches, GM Wesley So outclassed IM Barlo Nadera, while and Rolando Nolte toppled GM Win Lay Zaw of Myanmar to lead five other players with 2.5 points on two wins and one draw.

IM John Paul Gomez outplayed Woman International Master (WIM) Irene Sukandar of Indonesia, Rolando Andador overwhelmed IM Tirto of Indonesia, IM Hafizulhelmi Mas of Malaysia shocked GM Rogelio Antonio Jr., and IM Richard Bitoon drew with IM Sadikin Irwanto of Indonesia to join So and Nolte with 2.5 points.

Sadorra, Gonzales still clean in Subic Open

SUBIC—Playing online games worked wonders for Julio Catalino Sadorra Sunday night.

Exploiting his familiarity with the position, Sadorra trounced fellow International Master Zaw Htun Wynn of Myanmar in 48 moves of a Modern Benoni to keep his win run going in the 1st Subic International Open chess championship at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center.

Sadorra’s third straight victory in as many rounds pushed him on top with Grandmaster-elect Jayson Gonzales, who toppled Grandmaster Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor in 49 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Declined.

“It was pure luck that I’ve played the same game online,” said Sadorra, who has won his last seven games, including four in the recent 2nd Philippine Open chess championship where he wound up as the best Filipino finisher at fourth place.

“I’ll just take it one game at a time,” said the 21-year-old Sadorra, who returned to the country from Singapore to pursue a psychology course at De La Salle University.

Well-rested after a dismal stint in last month’s Battle of GMs, Gonzales pounced on a blunder by Villamayor to prevail in a rook against bishop ending and join Sadorra at 3.0 points.

Sadorra’s earlier victims were Xu Tong of China and compatriot Hamed Nouri. Gonzales, coach of the Far Eastern University chess team, also bested junior sensation Jan Emmanuel Garcia and FIDE Master Awam Wahono of Indonesia.

Top Filipino hope GM Wesley So bested countryman IM Barlo Nadera to lead five others with 2.5 points each.

Tied with So, the Dubai Open and Battle of GMs champion, were IMs John Paul Gomez, Richard Bitoon, Sadikin Irwanto of Indonesia and Hafizulhelmi Mas of Myanmar, who stunned GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, and National Masters Rolando Nolte and Rolando Andador.
The 22-year-old Gomez whipped Indonesian WIM Irene Kharisma Sukadar while Bitoon drew with Irwanto.

Nolte shocked second-seeded GM Win Lay Zaw of Myanmar while Andador subdued Indonesian IM Tirto.

Top-seeded GM Yuriy Kuzobov of Ukraine was held to a draw by Wahomo, to land at 2.0 points with 20 others, including GMs Eugene Torre, who split the point with fellow Olympian Emmanuel Senador, Villamayor and Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia.

Kuzobov also split the point with Jayson Salubre in the first round before beating China’s Shen Siyuan in the second. The third-seeded Megaranto was also held to a draw by Oliver Barbosa.

Also with 2.0 points were Villamayor, Wahomo, Wynn, IM Ronald Bancod, IM Chito Garma, Indonesian Novita Anjas, Senador, Myanmar’s Oo Kyaw Tun Nay, Filipino Victor Lluch, FM Roderick Nava, Efren Bagamasbad, Dino Ballcer, Nicomedes Alisangco, Rustum Tolentino, Indonesian FM Kosasih Cecep and Chinese Siyuan Shin.
