MARTYRDOM OF JAMES GORDON, Sr.

The Department of Education (DepEd) Olongapo led by Schools Superintendent Dr. Ligaya Monato will be joining the Olongapo City government in the commemoration of the 42nd Death Anniversary and Martyrdom of James L. Gordon, Sr. this coming February 20, 2009.

“Our Elementary and High School teachers, students, representatives from the various sectors and employees and officials of the city government, are all coordinating for the success of the event,” according to Dr. Monato.

Prior to the main event, there will be competitions on Poetry Reading for Elementary students and “Madulang Sabayang Pagbigkas” for secondary students. The Department of Education will also launch a book that features James L. Gordon Sr.’s colorful life.

Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. is supporting the planned activities as these will heighten the awareness of students about the “Father of Olongapo’’.

James L. Gordon, Sr., father of Mayor Bong and Senator Richard Gordon, is known as the Father of Olongapo for his valuable role and contributions in building the community. He was instrumental in obtaining independence from being a US reservation up to becoming a chartered city which was realized on June 1, 1966.
