DISASTER EXPERTS TO CONDUCT EXERCISES IN ‘GAPO
Twenty seven (27) foreign countries including the United States will be conducting a series of disaster management exercises in Olongapo City and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ) in May.
Last week, international countries such as Japan, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and United States have started conducting ocular inspection on selected areas in the city including Iram Resettlement Area, New Cabalan and New Kalalake Elementary Schools in preparation for the Asean Regional Forum on Voluntary Demonstration of Response on Disaster Relief Exercises on May 4-8, 2009.
The group of disaster experts has chosen Central Luzon to host this project. They will be conducting simulation exercises, medical services, construction of damaged property, sea and water search and rescue operations as part of its aim to help and educate the people of Olongapo and Central Luzon on disaster management.
The Olongapo City government, Olongapo Disaster Management Office(DMO), Office of the Civil Defense(OCD) and the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council(RDCC) are jointly working to impart knowledge and know-how in times of disaster and natural calamities.
“Our city is fortunate to have been chosen as one of the cities in Central Luzon to receive support from these group of experts,” DMO head Angie Layug said during the flag raising ceremony.
“Maige na yung maging handa tayo sa lahat ng sakuna, lalo na ang mga naninirahan sa malalayong lugar,” Mayor Gordon said.
