NEW MEDALS FOR OLONGAPO BOXERS
Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. acknowledged before the city government officials and employees Olongapo’s boxers who won in the recently concluded Smart National Amateur Boxing Championships held in Bacolod City.
The boxers, Larry Abarra and Julius Alberba both captured Bronze medals and Rex Canag clinched a silver medal . “Gold medal will be our next target , more training and efforts para sa lahat ng manlalaro natin,” Coach Arsenio Perez, Jr. said.
It can be recalled that Larry Abarra, a nineteen year old resident of Barangay Barretto already won several fights that earned him a slot at the Philippine Boxing team and member of the Southeast Asian Games for 2009 Contingent to Laos.
This year, Alberba is set to join the Philippine team and has to travel back to Baguio City together with Abarra to continue their training and spend the rest of the year mastering their craft.
Olongapo City Amateur Boxing Association President and City Sports Coordinator Angie Layug monitored Abarra’s boxing career since 2006 until last year where he transferred and continued his training in Baguio City.
Abarra started his boxing career in 2006 through Mayor Gordon’s project, “Paboksing ni Mayor sa Barangay” where his boxing skills immediately noticed.
“Si Larry is also a potential, more power sa lahat ng ating boxers,” Mayor Gordon said.
