TWO OLONGAPO PUBLIC SCHOOLS WIN IN NSPC 2009
Asinan Elementary School and Nellie E. Brown Elementary School brought home two (2) trophies for Olongapo in the recently concluded 2009 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) held in Naga City last February 15-21, 2009.
City Mayor James L. Gordon, Jr. displayed the trophies of the two schools during the flag raising ceremony program in Rizal Triangle Multi-Purpose Center last March 02, 2009.
Among the 2,000 school publications from the 17 regions in the country that competed, Asinan Elementary School’s “Ang Kinang ng Asinan” bagged the 6th place in Best in Sports Page in Filipino (Bracket B) while Nellie E. Brown Elementary School’s “The Riverside” placed 5th in Best in Sports Page in English (Bracket B).
The Olongapo delegation was led by Ariel Lansang, Elementary Supervisor in English and Emilia Abutog, Elementary Supervisor in Filipino who both received the awards after the conference in Naga City.
“Awards such as these will inspire other schools in Olongapo to intensify their school journalism programs in honing more campus writers and improve school publications in their strive for journalistic excellence,” remarks Gordon.
In a memorandum issued by Education Secretary Jesli A. Lapus, this year’s theme is “Climate Change: A Call for Responsible Campus Journalism.” The conference is aimed to promote awareness and understanding of climate change through varied journalistic approaches and demonstrate commitment to support programs and advocate for community initiatives to ward off negative effects of climate change through responsible journalism.
The annual conference is pursuant to Sec. 1, Rule IX of Republic Act 7079, also known as the Campus Journalism Act of 1991.
