OLONGAPO CHEERED ON PACMAN’S VICTORY
Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. and Olongapo City First Lady and Zambales Vice-Governor Anne Marie Gordon watched the Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto fight last Sunday, November 15, 2009 together with five thousand (5,000) Olongapeno fans at the Olongapo City Convention Center (OCCC).
The ‘first couple’ were excited and happy with the Olongapenos who watched the fight at the OCCC while still a lot of the people who were not accommodated inside watched at the lobby outside the venue.
Every time the Pound for Pound king gives his right and left punches, the people would shout and cheer for their idol. But the loudest cheer happened when the referee for the fight Kenny Bayless stopped the fight 55 minutes after the start of the 12th round.
The crowd went wild when the “Pinoy Champ” was declared the winner of the WBO Welterweight Championship, his 50th win and 7th title in 7 different weight divisions.
Meanwhile, Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. proudly announced to the people who were there to watch the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the title “Memorandum on Strengthening Exchange and Cooperation Between Olongapo City, Republic of the Philippines and Guam which was signed by Olongapo and Guam officials.
The mayor also showed the key that symbolizes the Olongapo City and Guam Sisterhood agreement which was recently signed in Guam by Mayor Bong Gordon, Vice Mayor Cynthia Cajudo, City Councilor Nathan Manalo and Speaker of the Guam Legislature Judith Won Pat.
“Ang panalo ni Pacquiao ay maihahalintulad natin sa sisterhood ng Olongapo at Guam. Ang agreement ay magsisilbing tulay sa dalawang lugar upang magkaroon ng bukas at tuloy-tuloy na ugnayan partikular na sa larangan ng Guam build-up project,” Mayor Gordon said.
It is the city’s tradition to give Olongapenos a chance to watch Pacquiao’s fights live and for free. “Hanggang sa susunod na laban ni Pacman ay muli tayong magkikita,” said the mayor.
