Subic Bay, Philippines - Preparations for the 3rd Pacific Mayor's Conference to be held here on
February 18, 19, 20, and 21, 2010 is in high gear as Mr. Bong Pineda, Chairman of the Metro Olongapo Chamber of Commerce announced during its meeting held recently at Chowking. Mayor Bong Gordon and the City of Olongapo, being host for this year's event are happy with the way things are going.
Each committee rendered reports with regards to their plans and requirement to ensure the activity's success.
The 3rd Pacific Mayor's Conference is the major annual event of the Association of Pacific Islands Local Government (APILG) which brings together Mayors, City and Municipal Council members and local government officials from the Territory of Guam, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), the Republic of Belau (Palau), the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and the Republic of the Philippines. This year?s conference will extend its invitation to local government representatives of our other Pacific island neighbors in the State of Hawaii, Territory of American Samoa and the Republic of Marshall Islands.
The Mission of the Conference is to conduct an international event that reflects the objectives of the APILG and showcase the shared as well as unique cultures of its member nations and states. Among the objectives of the Association are: to celebrate common elements in cultures and customs; to network in the areas of education, health care, agriculture, commerce and information technology; to encourage business and investments; to assist in the availability of affordable health care; and to improve and re-establish communication among families and friends.
It is anticipated that the 3rd Annual Conference will attract and bring about 500 attendees - or possibly more from Mayors offices and representatives of local and national governments, the private sector, and non-government organizations in the region, which will make it the largest conference of the APILG to date.
The APILG was formed in February 2007 as a collaborative effort among Mayors associations across the Pacific. It works with the Mayors Council of Guam, the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council in the CNMI, municipal councils in the islands of Rota, Tinian, and villages in the Federated States of Micronesia, the League of Municipalities of the Philippines, and the Metro Manila Mayors Association. The inaugural conference attracted more than 450 delegates from around the Pacific Rim, making it the largest gathering of government officials ever held in Guam and the region. The 2nd APILG was held in May 2009 in Saipan in the CNMI attended by more than 300 delegates.
