In an effort to fight Iron Deficiency Anemia(IDA) on children and adults in Olongapo City, Mayor James Gordon, Jr. has come up with a program called Iron Fortified Rice (IFR) or “Bigas na dinagdagan o sinangkapan ng IRON.

Iron Fortified Rice (IFR), a medium-term strategy for the control of nutritional anemia will be launched on Monday, November 22, 2010 at the FMA Hall, Olongapo City, 9:00 o’clock in the morning.

“Rice is an excellent vehicle for fortification, because Filipinos are basically rice-eating people regardless of income. Rice is the staple food in all regions of the country, although it is commonly combined with corn in the central
Philippines. If fortified rice is distributed to the general population, it would reach practically every Filipino,” Mayor Gordon explained.

Two Hundred (200) participants are expected to grace the launching, including representatives from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), National Nutrition Council Region 3 together with the City and Barangay Officials, with the special participation of DOST Secretary Mario Montejo.
