CATV slammed

OLONGAPO City, Color View Television cable subscribers in Subic, Zambales are opposing the compulsory use of "addressable box."

The complainants said CATV started implementing the scheme on Oct. 1. They said the cable firm would cut them off the air if they don't subscribe.

They said they used to pay a fixed rate of P300 for access to all TV channels, but with the new scheme, they would spend more.

Efren Mendegorin, general manager of Color View TV, said they had been announcing the scheme since 2002 but it was only last Oct. 1 that they fully implemented it.

"Ang layunin namin ay maiwasan ang mga nagnanakaw o nag-illegal tapping ng kable kaya mula nung Oktubre 1 ay wala nang mapanood na anumang programa sa telebisyon na programa kapag wala ka nitong addressable box," he said.

He said no public hearing was conducted since the company is exempted from doing so, being a "deregulated" company.

A certain Diane, Subic CATV customer relations officer, said cable subscribers have three package choices for the addressable box: P300, P450 or P600 monthly rate.

Residents warned they would protest against cable TV firm since the local government was not consulted.
