Zambales -- The government's ten-point agenda has found a worthy showcase in the Samahan ng mga Katutubong Kababaihang Aeta ng Sitio Paw-en, Aglao, San Marcelino, in Zambales. It is one of the beneficiaries under Women Employment through Entrepreneurship Development (WEED) Program.
The Samahan has twenty members and officers, some of them working students but mostly out-of-school youth, working in the farm. The main source of income in this area is farming.
The Department of Agriculture through an NGO (Herbal Farm Development) was the first government agency to coordinate with the group, giving trainings on different techniques in planting herbal plants. Next, the Department of Health (DOH) trained the group on soap making using this herbal plants as main ingredients.
The soaps they produce are akapulko, calamansi, papaya and pipino. These soaps are recommemded by health workers and private clinics in San Marcelino because of its effectiveness on skin diseases. The demand on their products is gradually increasing but they cannot afford to meet these demands due to lack of skills of some members and lack of funds. It is for these reasons they sought the assistance of the Local Government of San Marcelino and Department of Labor and Employment in Zambales. Now their projects are thrieving the competion in the market for generic products.
Herbal soap-making has considerably gained a wide market within Zambales and Metro Manila. Visiting Koreans to the mountain of San Marcelino, Zambales have learned of the effectivity of the akapulko soap and this increased the demand for the production of this soap for the Korean market. (PIA)
