BCDA cites new Japanese technology in building bridges
Top officials of the Japanese Embassy and the Bases Conversion Development Authority launched over the weekend a new bridge construction technology for the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) project, which when finished will become the country’s longest and most modern toll road with a distance of 93.7 kilometers.
Japanese engineers from the Kajima Obayashi-JFE Engineering-Mitsubishi Joint Venture (KOJM) last Friday started installing the first pair of giant steel beams for the Pasig-Potrero Bridge in Pampanga as part of the full blast SCTEx construction to meet its end-2007 deadline.
KOJM Project Manager Masato Otsubo said at 720 meters, the Pasig-Potrero Bridge is the longest span in the SCTEx Subic-Clark section. The first pair of girders installed last Friday measured 50 meters long and three meters high each, with a combined weight of 120 tons.
To put the massive girders in place, the engineers used the modern Launching Method which employed hydraulic jacks to lift the steel beams to the support columns from launching rails that are Teflon-plated, the first time such bridge technology is used in the Philippines.
"The SCTEx project is a big boost to the country’s investment and economic infrastructure, and we are making sure that everything about the SCTEx conforms to international standards,’’ said BCDA President and CEO Narciso Abaya during the ceremonial switch on for the steel girder laying.
Financed by a yen loan package from Japan, the SCTEx will connect the Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales to the Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga, then on to the Luisita Industrial Park in Tarlac. Once the SCTEx is finished, estimated travel time from Subic to Tarlac will be less than an hour.
The SCTEx is a flagship project of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to create a dynamic economic corridor in Central Luzon and the BCDA is the lead implementing agency.
The KOJM Joint Venture is the main contractor for SCTEx Package I (Subic-Clark Section). The Hazama-Tasei-Nippon Steel (HTN) Joint Venture, on other hand, is the main contractor for SCTEx Package II (Clark-Tarlac section).
The landmark construction event was also witnessed by Second Secretary for Economic Affairs Koichi Sakai of the Embassy of Japan and local officials from Central Luzon.
