By YUL MALICSE - Manila Bulletin
The Philippine Navy (PN) and the United States Navy (USN) begin today their week-long bilateral Cooperation Afloat and Training (CARAT) Exercise 2006 in Subic and other sites in Zambales and La Union.
Cmdr. Giovanni Carlo J. Bacordo, PN public information chief and spokesman, said five ships, aircraft, and naval special operations team from the PN are participating in the annual war games with their US counterparts.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will also participate in this year’s CARAT, Bacordo said.
Some 2,000 PN and USN sailors and marines are joining the bilateral exercise, which includes a series of drills and simulation activities to strengthen the PN’s Philippine fleet and Philippine Marine Corps tandem in their operational skills and synergy in carrying out combined operations, Bacordo said.
The Fleet-Marine Tandem is the PN’s contribution to the internal security operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), it was earlier underscored by PN flag-officer-in-command Vice Admiral Mateo M. Mayuga.
In addition to specific maritime security skills that will be highlighted in CARAT 2006, other activities include at-sea maneuvering and communications, maritime interdiction, search and rescue, and diving and salvage routine activities.
Symposiums on "visit, board, search and seizure, and aircraft" will also be held.
The participating PN ships are the BRP Apolinario Mabine (PS 36), BRP Heracleo Alano (PG 376), BRP Teotimo Figuracion (PG 389), and BRP Bacolod City (SAR 004) to the games.
The participating USN ships are the USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Hopper (DO 670), USS Cromelin (FF 37), USS Salvor (ARS 52), and USCGC Sherman (WHEC 720).
Mayuga and Bacordo said that in line with CARAT’s civil-military operations component, participating seacraft of both the Philippines and the United States navies will open their doors to civilian individuals and groups who are interested in taking tours on board.
]Medical and dental teams of the two navies will hold outreach activities for residents in selected localities in Zambales and La Union.
