Arroyo to open Dolores flyover next week

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The newly constructed eastbound lane of the Dolores Flyover at Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Highway will officially be opened to traffic on December 20 after an inaugural drive to be led by no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Sun.Star Pampanga learned Monday.

Sonia P. Soto, city administrator, said the President, assisted by Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez, among others, will be the first to cross the bridge which was constructed in a little more than three months. The westbound lane will follow after less than three months in February 2007.

Constructed by bridge specialist, Mabey and Johnson Ltd., the permanent flyover will replace the steel flyover erected as temporary solution to the traffic congestion at the crossing of the Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Highway (GSO) and the MacArthur Highway.

Though the shorter steel flyover contributed immensely in the relief of traffic congestion in the intersection, Public Works and local officials found it necessary to erect wider and longer spans to further decongest one of the most important road arteries in the component city.

Mabey & Johnson Ltd. representatives said the Flyover System used in the construction is a quick and clean option with the minimum of disruption associated with new traffic alleviation schemes in the form of prefabricated steel flyovers with steel decks and piers.

Before the inaugural rites for the new flyover, Mrs. Arroyo will first attend the early morning mass or "Simbang Bengi" at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

After breakfast at the city hall, the President will be the guest of honor in the inauguration of the newly-constructed wet section of the Old Public Market in the Poblacion area here.
