Sixth National Teachers Congress on Visual Impairment

This year, on December 13-15, the Sixth National Teachers Congress on Visual Impairment will take place in Olongapo City.
TO eliminate the causes of avoidable blindness by the year 2020 and to stop the projected doubling of its prevalence rate worldwide between 1990 and 2020, the World Health Organization, in partnership with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness launched in 1999 the Global Initiative for the Elimination of Avoidable Blindness known as Vision 2020 – the Right to Sight. Eighty-nine member states, including the Philippines, established national coordinating committees for the implementation of Vision 2020.

Visual impairment is a national concern in the Philippines. Premature birth, poor nutrition and measles are the leading causes of preventable blindness in children. To save their sight, early detection and treatment are needed. These children need education, too. And teachers must be fully equipped to deal with these children. The answer to this is for our teachers to update their skills through seminars and trainings.

This year, on December 13-15, the Sixth National Teachers Congress on Visual Impairment will take place in Olongapo City. It aims to improve the skills of specialized and general classroom teachers to facilitate access for all children with visual impairment in appropriate programs; identify means to effectively facilitate the necessary educational provision and identify strategies to overcome the challenges of providing effective educational program.

The congress is sponsored by the Department of Education through the Special Education Division of the Bureau of Elementary Education (SPED-BEE), in cooperation with the Resources of the Blind, Inc. (RBI) and the Christoffel Blindenmission. It will be attended by special education teachers, school administrators with special education programs from both public and private schools, supervisors-in-charge of special education from the regional and sub-regional levels, superintendents, chiefs of the Elementary and Secondary Division of DepEd, other government and non-government organizations working for children with special needs, and parents.

The three-day affair will be a learning experience for the participants as specialists share their knowledge in the plenary and committee sessions. Other highlights will be the awarding ceremonies to give recognition to Outstanding and Loyal Teachers, and the Actions Steps and Commitment by administrators, SPED teachers, and parents, to strengthen their partnership towards the common goal of achieving equality in education of children with visual impairment.

We congratulate the participants and organizers of the Sixth National Teachers Congress on Visual Impairment and wish them success in all their endeavors.
