Pool of Former OFWs Planned for New Jobs in Subic
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) yesterday said plans are underway to establish a pool of former overseas workers for possible jobs in new factories in Subic.
Labor Secretary Arturo Brion disclosed that several Taiwanese businessmen are thinking of setting up of manufacturing firms in Subic and Clark economic zones.
Furthermore, Brion said, their department has made initial talks with representatives of Taiwan’s business sector focusing on the idea of employing ex-OFWs in factories that Taiwanese firms plan to operate in the Philippines.
“Our workers’ exemplary attitude and dedication to their craft have become our global trademark. It has not only propelled us to be one of the most preferred workers overseas but more significantly, it has enticed multinational companies to put up businesses here,” Brion stressed.
He explained that this pool was discussed during his recent trip to Taiwan where he welcomed the idea as it underscores the reputation of OFWs as highly dependable and proficient workers.
Brion said the manpower pooling and the prospect of providing local jobs to former OFWs in Taiwan embody an essential component of the DOLE’s reintegration program for OFWs and their families.
“It demonstrates too the “brain gain” that we derive from overseas employment as these workers will use the experience they secured from working abroad,” he said.
Under the program, migrant workers who decide to return to the country for good may avail of government services that will assist them to be placed in local jobs, embark on livelihood or entrepreneurship opportunities, or put their hard-earned money to sound investments.
