A group of Taiwanese investors are looking at investing over P1 billion in Subic Bay Freeport Zone for the construction of a world-class hospital.
In an interview, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) vice president for services George Siy said the Taiwanese businessmen are currently looking for a Filipino partner.
"They want to build a world class hospital in Subic. This is a big investment. Easily they will put in more than P1 billion," Siy told reporters.
According to Siy, aside from putting up a hospital, the Taiwanese are looking at developing a community around the medical facility.
Siy said a Taiwanese-run hospital will widen the medical tourism market of the country.
"Currently we are targeting people from the United States to avail of our medical program. The new hospital will open our medical tourism to the Chinese market," Siy explained.
He said the Chinese are more comfortable with healthcare providers that speak their native language. "This would open the doors to Chinese speaking patients," Siy said.
Investments from Taiwan is expected to pour in the Philippines in the next three years as the country intensifies its efforts to corner a substantial portion of Taiwan’s potential investment in the region.
"We expect investments from Taiwan to increase by 50 percent in 2008 given the developments in infrastructure," Siy noted.
Last week, a delegation of Taiwanese businessmen visited the country.
"Last year there was no delegation, we are glad they came but there is a lot of things to be done. We have to convince them to locate here instead of the other countries," Siy noted.
Siy said they were impressed with the improvement in infrastructure particularly the new road linking Subic, Tarlac and Clark.
"They see that we are serious about it (infrastructure development).
They don’t need to see it done they just need to know that we are doing something about it," Siy added.
Aside from improved infrastructure, Siy said another reason to invest in the country is the favorable economic situation.
"This is the first time that our numbers are in line with the other countries. Before we record a one percent growth to their seven percent now we have seven percent which is not bad when compared to the eight percent registered by other nations," Siy said
