Chinese carmaker taps Subic

Chinese carmaker taps Subic as its distribution hub for ‘Geely’ cars

Shopping for a brand-new, yet affordable family car? Subic just might be the place for you.

Geely automobiles, promoted as alternative cars for the Filipino middle class, will be distributed here in Subic to reach customers and dealers in the Luzon area, including Metro Manila, said Geely Philippines president Joycelin Torres-Rodriguez.

The cars priced at P387,000 for the 1.1-liter MR hatchback, and P489,999 for its 1.3-liter CK sedan will be brought to the Subic distribution hub tax-paid, just like the car imports of mainstream distributors.

Rodriguez said some 2,000 units of Geely hatchback and sedan models will be shipped through Subic for dealers and customers in Metro Manila, Pampanga, Bulacan, and Dagupan City in Pangasinan.

The firm plans to eventually open up 12 dealerships in the country, with the main show room in Quezon City.

“Our distribution office, however, will be here in the Subic Bay area,” Rodriguez said during the recent launching of the China-made automobiles here.

Subic became the choice distribution hub for the firm because of the newly-completed container terminal in the Freeport and “for easy communications and negotiations.”

Rodriguez said that Geely Philippines is also planning to set up an assembly plant in the Subic Freeport for semi-knock down units to avail of the incentives offered by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) to business locators.

The Geely cars, which are manufactured by the China-based Geely Group, are being positioned in the country for the B-C-D income brackets, comprising 75 percent of the firm’s potential car buyer market.

“The reason why there is a big discrepancy between car sales compared to our huge population is that there is no quality car available at prices affordable to families in the middle class,” Rodriguez said.

“This is where Geely comes in. We are introducing a product of good quality, which is around 30 percent lower than the lowest one in the market today,” she added.

Albert Wu, director of Pan Fil Inter Trade Co. Inc., which is the exclusive Philippine distributor of Geely automobiles, said around 80 percent of the cars produced by Geelythe largest private car manufacturer in Chinaare exported to foreign markets.

These markets include Russia, Venezuela, Peru, Kuwait, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa and England.

In April, the Geely CK sedan will be launched in the United States, marking the first Chinese car to ever pass US standards, Wu added.

In the Philippines, the firm will offer both hatchback and sedan models on a five-year installment plan, with a deposit requirement of 20 percent, or around P77,000.

The firm has also offered the SBMA and its subsidiary, the Freeport Service Corporation, a tie-up through bank financing to benefit SBMA employees and other Freeport workers.

The SBMA, according to Rodriguez, will go for tie-up program, because the cars will be entering the country through Subic Bay.

“For a middle-income family earning around P25,000 to P30,000, this is really affordable,” Rodriguez said.

“With the installment plan, you would be paying around P7,000 monthly for the MR hatchback, and P9,000 for the CK sedan,” she said.

Both cars, Wu said meanwhile, are fuel efficientaveraging 22 kms per liter in highways and 20 kms in the city for the 1100cc. For the 1300cc model, the record is 20 kms in highways and 18 kms in city driving.

With the low cost and fuel efficiency, however, all basic models come with power windows, side mirror, lock and keyless entry.

“Add another P20,000 and you already have mag wheels and CD player,” Rodriguez said.
