Arrest PASG chief -- Rep. Romualdo
THE House committee on good government, chaired by Camiguin Rep. Pedro Romualdo, has threatened to cite Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group head Undersecretary Antonio Villar for contempt and have him arrested.
This, as the solon has said Congress rejects the weak alibi of a top official of the PASG to snub its subpoena due to his resignation.
Albay Rep. Al Francis Bichara invoked the Constitution, saying the concept of accountability of a public official does not end due to resignation.
He said Villar is not free to evade a subpoena issued by the House of Representatives committee on good government simply because he’s stepping down from his post.
“Resignation is not an excuse for Villar to ignore our subpoena and not to shed light on smuggling of luxury vehicles,” he noted.
Villar continued to ignore the committee’s four invitations to appear, prompting members to summon him.
Bichara belied speculations of his possession of four luxury vehicles hurled by Villar against him. “I have nothing to hide from him. That’s why I want to see him face to face, sit down with him and clear things before a proper venue,” he said.
He revealed information of Villar’s questionable closed-door meeting with the importers and brokers of Seaport and Airport Stakeholders Association Inc. held at the Jumbo Chinese Floating Restaurant, Qing Dao Room at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila on October 1, 2007 where a P10,000 per container fee for Villar and PASG was established.
Among those who took part were Dennis Lee, Ahan Chong, Baby Reyes, Frank Wong, Manny Santos, David Tan, Piranha King Almeda, Jeff King, James Ng, Edwin Santos and Chimen Wong.
