BASILAN GUESTS ADMIRE VOLUNTEERISM IN OLONGAPO
A delegation from Mindanao composed of the Lamitan Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) and Basilan Island Development Association (BIDA) visited Olongapo City from March 1-4.
Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. and staff of the City Tourism Office welcomed the guests led by ABC President Tatuh Macrohon and BIDA Chairperson Ibno Turabin.
The educational tour showcased the rich history of Olongapo City, including the rise of volunteerism among Olongapeños after the departure of the US Naval Forces from what is now the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ). In a video presentation entitled “City for the Future,” the visitors learned how the Olongapeños protected and preserved the base and transformed it into a Free Port.
During the four-day trip, the tourists from Basilan were able to visit the Olongapo City Convention Center, City Hall, City Museum, Bgy. Barretto Area and SBFZ.
Meanwhile, the guests from Basilan maximized their visit by selling indigenous products that include colorful batik, malong and many more.
The visitors from Basilan also expressed their desire to have a sisterhood with Olongapo City.
