PASG to Bichara: Settle taxes or else
The Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group warned Friday that Albay 2nd District Rep. Al Francis Bichara could face smuggling charges if he fails to pay proper taxes for importing four luxury vehicles into the country, radio dzMM reported.
PASG operations director Edmund Arugay said that instead of criticizing the agency Bichara should cooperate with PASG and Customs officials and pay the proper taxes. Arugay said Bichara was the only congressman who protested the seizure of alleged smuggled vehicles in Makati City.
PASG chief Antonio "Bebot" Villar earlier revealed that Bichara owned four of the 81 luxury vehicles recovered by PASG from the Auto Sports 24 car repair shop in Makati City last December 14.
PASG said the congressman's luxury vehicles include two Grand Cherokee, a Volvo and a Jaguar. Investigations of the agency showed that the Grand Cherokee with plate number ZEP 947 was mysteriously registered with the Land Transportation Office under the name of Bichara on December 17 last year, or three days after the raid at the Auto Sports 24.
Further investigations also showed that the car, which was supposedly a 2006 model, was registered as a 1995 model.
Villar had also revealed that Bichara failed to present proper documents that could prove he legally owned a Jaguar SI model 2001.
The PASG chief made the revelations after Zambales Rep. Milagros Magsaysay filed a resolution calling for the abolition of the agency, which Bichara endorsed to the House of Representatives committee on good government.
On Thursday Villar submitted his resignation letter to President Arroyo, which the President refused.
Villar had repeatedly snubbed the hearings of the House committee on good government in connection with alleged car smuggling operations in the country, particularly in Cebu province. ABSCBN
