'Cosme' death toll at 44; damages at P3.7B - NDCC

The death toll from tropical storm "Cosme" rose to 44 while damage to property had risen to more than P3.743 billion, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said on its website Thursday.

In its 8 a.m. report dated May 22, the NDCC said some 24 were injured while the National Transmission Corp. (Transco) continued work to restore power to Zambales, La Union and Pangasinan.

Of the 44 dead, 39 were from Region I while four died in Central Luzon and one in the Cordillera region.

Eight fishermen from Pangasinan, the NDCC said, are still missing.

At least 205,165 families or 1,107,875 persons were affected in 1,176 villages in 61 towns and seven cities in five provinces in Ilocos, Central Luzon, Western Visayas and the Cordilleras.

Of these, 30 families are staying in nine evacuation centers.

Some 26,318 houses were totally destroyed while 61,090 were reported partial damages.

Damage to property amounted to more than P3.7 billion including P3.351 billion in damage to agriculture, P232.379 million in damage to roads and bridges, and P175.548 million to school buildings.

Citing data from Transco, NDCC said electrical load was 92.41 percent restored in La Union, 30 percent in Pangasinan, and 95.2 percent in Zambales.

Zambales, Pangasinan, the cities of Baguio and Alaminos were placed under a state of calamity.

In Iloilo City, the NDCC said that 40 barangays and four districts plus another 29 barangays in the Jaro district were also under a state of calamity.- GMANews.TV
