Gonzales nears top plum at Subic Open
GM Jayson Gonzales got the boost for solo lead after beating Zaw Htun Wynn of Myanmar in the critical seventh round of the 2008 Subic Open international chess championship late Wednesday.
A report posted on Sportsnews.ph said Gonzales defeated Wynn in 56 moves of the Irregular opening to lead the pack with 6 points.
The win, coupled the 19-move draw between top seed GM Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine and GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia pushed Gonzales to lead by a full point going into the final two rounds Subic Open.
As of late Thursday, Gonzales is squaring off with Kuzubov in the eighth and penultimate round for the title and the top prize of $5,000.
Kuzubov is one of eight players with 5 points following the draw with Megaranto.
Also listed among competitors with 5 points are Megaranto, Wynn, Filipino GMs Wesley So, Eugene Torre and Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor, Oliver Barbosa and Rolando Andador.
So, who lost to Wynn in the sixth round, bounced back by defeating IM Richard Bitoon in 53 pushes of the Sicilian.
Torre, Asia’s first GM, beat IM Tirto of Indonesia in 47 moves of the Nimzo Indian while Villamayor blasted compatriot NM Emmanuel Senador.
The nine-round tournament is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines in cooperation with the Department of Tourism and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
A total cash prize of $30,000 will be given up to the 32nd placers, with the top placer getting the lion’s share of $5,000. ABS CBN NEWS
