AUTISM AWARENESS ORIENTATION HELD
In line with the 30th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), in cooperation with Autism Society of the Philippines-Olongapo Chapter, an Autism Awareness Orientation was held at the Olongapo City Convention Center (OCCC) on July 16, 2008. Dr. David Calapatia and his wife, Engr. Marissa Calapatia were the resource speakers of the orientation.
The orientation was attended by people from different sectors of the city including parents, teachers, students, teachers, City Health employees, members of various Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and others who are related to children with autism.
Dr. Calapatia discussed the basic facts and the most frequently asked questions about autism. He explained the signs and symptoms, detection and diagnosis if the child has autism or not.
“Autism is not a disease, it is a spectrum disorder which means that every children with autism have a distinct sign or manifestation from other children with autism,” explained Dr. Calapatia.
Afterwards, his wife, Engr. Calapatia discussed the ‘Early Steps in Autism Management’ which was primarily directed to Barangay Health Workers and Day Care Teachers so they can detect early signs of autism and arm them with the appropriate steps and measures when they have children with autism under their care.
“We are giving this orientation to give people knowledge on autism, its signs and how to manage it. There is no cure, it is not an option so early detection and management is the only option that we have,” Dr. Calapatia said.
It is estimated that one in every one hundred and fifty persons has (1:150) autism.
