ANNUAL VOLUNTEERS’ DAY
On November 24, 2008 the Annual Volunteers’ Day will be observed in Olongapo City. It was announced Monday, November 17 during the flag raising ceremony of city government employees that a traditional parade will commence at Olongapo City Mall going to the Olongapo City Convention Center, where a simple program will follow.
Every year, Olongapo City and Subic Bay Freeport commemorate Volunteers’ day to pay tribute to heroic Olongapeños who stood up in preserving and maintaining the former US Naval Facility. The event is being dedicated to more than 8,000 volunteers of Olongapo who were instrumental in rebuilding and developing the Subic Bay Freeport Zone and Olongapo City into a bustling economic zone.
After the program at the Olongapo City Convention Center, the participants in the parade will proceed to the Volunteers’ Shrine for the annual floral offering and reaffirmation of commitment to volunteerism. The parade is expected to draw local government employees and officials, representatives from the local and private sectors and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
November 24, 1992 is a day where the last Navy ship of the United States left the former Subic Naval Base. Despite worries of unemployment, the Olongapeños insisted to rebuilt the facility thus, made a decision to protect and preserve the $8billion facility which gave birth to Volunteerisn Spirit in Olongapo.
