OLONGAPO CITY IS FINALIST AGAIN IN GAWAD KALASAG 2009
The City of Olongapo is once again vying for the “Best City Disaster Coordinating Council 2009” under the prestigious Gawad Kalasag award annually given by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).
The Olongapo City Disaster Coordinating Council (OCDCC) is contending against two other disaster response teams namely Makati City and Legaspi City in Albay in the national level for the Highly Urbanized/ Independent City category.
Olongapo City received the same award in 2002 and 2003 and again in 2007 and 2008, besting all time contender Makati City two years in a row. If the city wins it this year, Olongapo City will be elevated to the Hall of Fame.
“Recognition such as this motivates us to exert more efforts to sustain and innovate what is best with the involvement of all stakeholders,” Mayor James “Bong” Gordon, Jr. said.
“I am also convinced that the city is being recognized consistently because of the effective systems for preparedness, mitigation, response and rehabilitation that the city uses in time of disasters,” he added.
According to Disaster Management Office Chief and executive officer of the OCDCC Angelito Layug, “the city is continuously training and adopting new knowledge in disaster rescue operation.”
Meanwhile, the Olongapo Fire Rescue Team, a component of the OCDCC that also delivers emergency support services to different communities, agencies, and institutions, is already a hall of famer as the Best Emergency Response Team (GOERS) after winning for three consecutive years in 2006-2008.
