PINOY YOUNG POLITICAL LEADERS VISIT AUSTRALIA
Subic, Zambales. Seven young political leaders from the Philippines have successfully attended the ten-day political exchange program of Australian Political Exchange Council (APEC) that ended last March 6, 2006 in Sydney, Australia.
These delegates to this program are all from the Philippine Council of Young Political Leaders (PCYPL) that include Bulacan Governor Josie dela Cruz as head of delegation, Zambales Vice Governor Ramon G. Lacbain II, Congressmen Del De Guzman of Marikina City, Edgardo Chatto of Bohol and Marcelino Libanan of Eastern Samar, Davao City Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang and PCYPL Executive Director Rollie Fabi.
They are the first batch of delegates to visit Australia and in July of this year seven delegates from Australia are also expected to visit the Philippines to study the system of government of the country from the national to the local level.
The seven delegates arrived in Sydney on February 27 and met with state officials of New South Wales and then proceeded to Canberra to interact with federal officials of the Australian government and observe the session of both houses of the federal parliament.
"We had the chance to meet the Senate President and the Speaker of Australian Federal Parliament and also leaders of various political parties such as the Liberal Party, the Labour Party and The Nationals. We also observed the question hour which shows democracy in action. We saw prime minister Howard and his ministers answer questions from the members of the opposition regarding national issues and concerns.
How we wish to see our president back in the Philippines also being questioned by members of congress for all her actions and her cabinet secretaries instead of preventing her cabinet from appearing during sessions of both houses of congress during investigations", according to Zambales vice governor Lacbain.
The delegates also met with state government officials and leaders of various state universities in Bisbane, Queeensland.
City council officials headed by Mayor Peter Corones in Gladstone, Queensland also met with the delegates regarding the functions of the city government in relation to the state and federal government.
Filipino-Australian communities in Brisbane and Gladstone also got their chance to interact with the delegates who were accompanied by Member of Parliament Paul Neville of Queensland.
Aside from Australia the PCYPL also has an exchange program with the American Council of Young Political Leaders and the young political leaders from China.
