DFA: Govt still wants custody of US marines
The Department of Foreign Affairs said on Monday that the government is not giving up on its efforts to have the custody of the four US marines accused of raping a 22-year-old Filipina in Subic, Zambales.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo said the department is following up its request to the US Embassy for the custody of Staff Sgt. Chad Brian Carpentier and Lance Cpls. Daniel Smith, Keith Silkwood and Dominic Duplantis, who were charged with the rape on November 1 at the Subic Bay Freeport.
DFA officials said the government is pursuing all legal actions to seek the transfer of the four accused from the US Embassy to a Philippine facility.
The department was reacting to an appeal by the victim for MalacaƱan to intercede to have the marines placed in Philippine government custody.
The victim also said the civic and rescue work of the US marines at the Leyte landslide area should not overshadow the crime committed against her by the US servicemen. Jonathan Vicente, ABS CBN
