SUBIC BAY - The multititled Baguio Cinderellas blanked Viva Greens of La Salle-Zobel, 3-0, for their nth title in beach football—the 2006 Legenda Kicksand Cup—over the weekend at the boardwalk here.
Veteran strikers Anna Caba-nilla and Richelle Tabisula led the girls to six wins without a loss in their successful retention of the title against nine Metro Manila teams in the two-day series.
Cabanilla, a mother of four whose 13 goals in the 1991 National YKL-Fuji Cup remains unbroken, top-scored anew with nine of the girls’ 19 goals. Tabisula, also a mother of two, contributed six goals, while third-generation players Melody Bucahan and Judith Doctolero added two each.
Goalie Romadallana Llaneta, who took time to breastfeed her 10-month-old son, Darryl Mark, in-between games, teamed up with defender Vangie Gigan in yielding only one goal, a controversial kick-in by Viva Greens in the eliminations.
Barely making it to the venue with support from the Baguio City government and the Benguet Electric Cooperative, the Cinderellas debuted with a 5-0 shutout of University of the Philippines B.
They then blanked Losers Football Club, 2-0, and San Beda A, 4-0, before outgunning Viva Greens, 3-1.
The Cinderellas, who earned their sobriquet for having to scrounge for funds to be able to compete, then forged the championship showdown by eliminating UP A, 1-0 in the crossover semis of the five-a-side summer cup organized by Mike Athab of the Beach Football Association of the Philippines.
Powerhouse Mama Sita’s bounced back from the losers’ bracket to clinch the men’s title with a 2-0 victory over newcomer Makiling, after front-running Baguio collapsed in the semis.
The Baguio boys emerged the favorites after topping the seven-team elimination series with a clean 6-0 win-loss slate, including a 3-1 victory against Makiling and a 3-2 upset of Mama Sita’s.
Pitted anew in the crossover against Makiling, a hastily assembled team of foreign expatriates that barely made it to the semis with a 3-4 card, the Baguio squad was shown the exit after their taller rivals scored with a tip-in near the end of the second half.
