GMA orders probe of soaring land prices along ....

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered Thursday the Department of Finance to conduct an immediate investigation into the 1,000 percent increase per square meter of the price of land affected by the Mabalacat Expressway.

The President announced her directive to Finance Secretary Margarito Teves in an interview this morning over radio DWRW-FM hosted by station manager Perry Pangan.

The Chief Executive has been informed that the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has raised the road right-of-way price of the raw lands along the Mabalacat Expressway 10 times, from the original P1,000 per square meter to P10,000 per sq.m.

"Instead of the government spending P100 million, we would now be paying P1 billion" for the road right-of-way of the Mabalacat Expressway, the President said.

The Mabalacat Expressway is a portion of the P27-billion Tarlac-Clark-Subic Expressway project that is expected to spur economic activities in the eco-zone area which the government envisions as the future logistics hub in Asia and Pacific regions.

The President expressed satisfaction that Mabalacat Mayor Marino Morales had informed her during the second round of discussion on the joint Cabinet-Regional Development (RDC) Metro Luzon mega-region that he would personally look into the drastic increase in the road-right-of-way prices.

She said the people and local government units (LGUs) must support and cooperate with the national government in bringing about economic growth to the entire country.

Economic progress is not something that will just happen, "we have to make it happen," she said.

The Tarlac-Clark section of the Tarlac-Clark-Subic Expressway project is scheduled to be completed in August 2007 while the Subic-Clark portion is slated to be finished in November, also next year.

"Actually, I was briefed that it (expressway) is 33 percent or one-third complete," the President said. (PNA)
