PN-US ships arrive in Subic for CARAT 2006

The Philippine Navy and United States Navy are set to hold a weeklong combined bilateral naval exercise starting on Tuesday.

Code-named Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Exercise 2006," the training sites will be in Zambales and La Union.

Officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and USN will grace the opening ceremony of the exercise at this premier Freeport zone on Aug. 15.

Five ships, aircraft, and Naval Special Operations Group (NAVSOG) from the Philippine Navy will see action with their US counterparts during the exercise. The Philippine Coast Guard will also participate in the naval training.

The participating US participating ships which arrived early Monday morning at the former US Ship Repair Facility here, are the USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Hopper (DO 670), USS Cromelin (FF 37), USS Salvor (ARS 52), and USCGC Sherman (WHEC 720).

PN participating ships are the BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS 36), BRP Heracleo Alano (PG 376), BRP Teotimo Figuracion (PG 389) and BRP Bacolod City (LC 550). The Coast Guard ship that will participate during the weeklong naval exercise is its search and rescue ship SAR 004.

The series of drills and simulation activities are expected to strengthen the Philippine Navy's Fleet-Marine Tandem in their operational skills and synergy in carrying out combined operations.

The Fleet-Marine Tandem is the Navy's contribution to the internal security and counter-terrorism operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

In line with CARAT's civil-military operations component, participating sea craft of both the Philippines and US Navies will be open to the public.
Medical and dental teams of the two navies will also hold outreach activities to residents in selected localities in Zambales and La Union. (PNA)
Mayor Bong Gordon warmly welcomes the officers and men of CARAT2006 as they visited the Mayor in Olongapo City Hall yesterday for a courtesy call.
