SUBIC, Zambales: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Friday ordered the dismantling of illegal fish cages owned by six operators in a two-hectare area off Barangay Cawag.
The orders were issued to Saka Agri Ventures, Biotop Philippines Agriculture Company, Neo-Mega Seahorse Aqua Farms Corp., Golden Aqua Harvest Inc., Sahara Feeds Corp., Manuel Sy Ko and Danilo Javier.
Lormelyn Claudio, the department’s regional director, said the operators failed to acquire environmental compliance certificates.
Claudio said the operators were informed as early as January to get the certificates, but not one has applied for it.
She disclosed she has been receiving reports since June about dead fish in the area that houses illegal fish cages.
The Zambales provincial government and the Subic Bay Resort Association, which opposed the illegal operations, lauded the DENR’s action.
“This is to protect the welfare of the people and the marine life in the area were the fish cages are located,” Vice Gov. Ramon Lacbain said.
The operators were ordered to dismantle their fish cages in seven days and pay a fine of P50,000 each
