PASG chief to ‘instant’ relatives: I am just here to work

The Philippine Star

Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) Antonio “Bebot” Villar Jr. said he has lost many old friends because of the tough job President Arroyo gave him, but at the same time gained many “instant” relatives and kumpadres looking for jobs and “connections.”

Villar, a former mayor of Sto. Tomas, Pangasinan, told The STAR that sometimes he feels lonely waging his battle against smuggling in the country as it had cost him some friends whose requests he had to decline.

“I value friendship a lot but I am hoping they would understand me if I do not give in to their requests because I am here to work,” he said.

Villar added that if these people who consider him a friend truly love him, he expects them to understand him.

“Nothing personal, just plain work,” he said, laughing. Villar said he often asks his family and real relatives if the people seeking his help are really his kin or not.

“But my real relatives and kumpadres know that to me black is black, white is white, no gray color,” he said.

Villar said smugglers and their cohorts call him asar (meaning a villain) and not anti-smuggling czar because of his job.

“I know I’m holding a dangerous position,” he said, adding that his enemies have resorted to sending him death threats.

Reports say that a pot money is up in a campaign to discredit him.

He said in just a short time since he accepted his job, he is happy that Mrs. Arroyo has recognized his efforts and lauded him for his accomplishments in going after smugglers and making them pay what is due to the government.

“I hope smugglers will mend their ways and pay the correct taxes to the government. They’re already full. It’s bad to be gluttonous as they might suffer from indigestion,” Villar said, laughing again.

He noted that there have been tempting offers, but he has refused them all.

“Not that I am playing hard to get but you see, sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater interest of the country,” Villar said.

Mrs. Arroyo gave Villar a pat on the back for his group’s latest seizure of five luxury vehicles – a Lamborghini, a BMW, a Ferrari and two Porsches – with a total estimated value of P100 million. The five vehicles were among the 25 smuggled luxury cars the PASG seized at the Subic Bay Freeport.

The President wanted the vehicles destroyed during her visit to Subic within the week. Eva Visperas
