SBMA imposes ban on KTV operation

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – A moratorium has been imposed on the operations of adult karaoke television (KTV) establishments here by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) in an effort to keep this Freeport’s image as an investment center and a family- oriented tourist destination.
The moratorium was approved by the SBMA board of directors after the officials noted that of the 12 KTV operators here, five are adult KTVs, lawyer Ruben Fruto, SBMA corporate secretary, said.
The SBMA board further resolved not to renew the contract of KTV establishments located within 100 meters of schools and churches. It also disallowed “carinderias” or food kiosks in the Freeport to operate KTVs in their premises, Fruto said.
SBMA’s investments processing department (IPD), which recommended the new policy, said SBMA officials had earlier turned down two investments proposals fro restaurant – KTV operation “due to the negative impressions” about the business. The officials also decided to stop allowing more KTVs because Subic’s business district has a limited area and can no longer accommodate additional KTV establishments.
“It’s also not practical,” said IPD manager Ronnie Yambao. ”More KTVs would make the competition stiffer, and this may eventually affect these businesses.”
