Finance implicates 2 officials in smuggling
The Department of Finance has filed charges before the Office of Ombudsman against two Customs officials in Subic for facilitating the release and registration of 14 smuggled luxury cars.
In a statement released Thursday, the Revenue Integrity Protection Service, which is a unit of Finance, presented a complaint affidavit against Deputy District Collector for Assessment Pricilla Cordova and Chief of Assessment Division Atty. Baltazar Morales. They allegedly conspired to release 14 smuggled vehicles without charging the correct duties and taxes. The cars were also registered, before they were transported to Metro Manila.
The Service found that Cordova and Morales used their position and influence to facilitate the release of the smuggled cars.
The consignee for the cars is Hidematsu Corp., which was identified as a locator in Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, according to the Service’s affidavit. It also said the cars were brought to the Philippines by Koreans, who were not named, and that vehicles came from different countries. The smuggled luxury cars included a BMW 750 Li and Chevrolet Corvette.
The Bureau of Customs seized the smuggled luxury cars, which were found in a Quezon City car showroom.
Cordova and Morales allegedly provided protection for their subordinates and other accomplices, who were earlier charged by the Service.
The Revenue Integrity Protection Service investigates, conducts lifestyle checks and files complaints against erring officials under the Department of Finance, especially those from the Bureau of Internal Revenue and Customs.
Earlier, the Service charged six Customs personnel who were allegedly involved in undervaluing luxury vehicles up to 90 percent of its actual value. As a result, the importers paid lower taxes than they should have
