Gordon, Lacson confirm oust Villar plot
Enrile, Angara, Pimentel eyed as replacements

MANILA, Philippines -- There is a plot to oust Senate President Manuel Villar and it has been going on for at least the past three months, Senators Richard Gordon and Panfilo Lacson confirmed Friday.
Gordon said Senators Juan Ponce-Enrile, Edgardo Angara, and Aquilino Pimentel Jr., the current minority leader, are being eyed to replace the Senate leader.
All told, two majority senators -- Gordon and Angara -- and six from the minority -- Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal, Panfilo Lacson, Manuel Roxas II, Benigno Aquino III, Rodolfo Biazon and Loren Legarda -- have separately expressed dissatisfaction with Villar’s leadership.
Earlier, Lacson said talks of replacing Villar have been going on since his election as Senate president in July but described the effort to oust Villar as “not serious.”
He also said it was not the Liberal Party bloc led by Senator Manuel Roxas II who initiated the effort to unseat Villar, although two members of the party -- Biazon and Aquino -- have expressed displeasure with the Senate president’s leadership. He had refused to say who the coup plotters are.
“It's not the LP bloc who's initiating. There's actually nothing beyond some loose discussions here and there, as there are no serious ouster talks that could spoil Senate President Villar's Christmas holidays,” Lacson said in an exchange of text messages.
“There is much to be desired in the present leadership in the chamber. I believe we can do better than passing legislation through caucuses and consensus building in the executive lounge,” he said, describing Villar's leadership style.
“I want to see more open, intelligent, and uninhibited deliberations of bills and resolutions on the floor rather than behind closed doors. I want to see a Senate president who can preside and participate in such debates,” Lacson said.
Aside from the three names proposed by Gordon to replace Villar, Lacson said Gordon and Senator Miriam-Defensor-Santiago “can make a much better Senate president than Villar.”
Lacson also said the country needs a stronger Senate president, one “who can stand up and state clearly his position on sensitive political issues affecting the Senate and the country.”
