Group seeks full benefits for Pinoys in multinational firms
Filipinos who are employed by multinational companies should be given life insurance and hospitalization benefits just like what the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are getting.
This was suggested by the overseas recruitment sector after three Filipino employees of Hanjin company died inside the company's worksite located inside the Subic Bay Freeport in Olongapo City.
"Employees of these multinational firms should be given better protection by their employers from industrial accidents and work-related acquisition of diseases," said Jackson Gan from Federated Association of Manpower Exporters (Fame).
He explained that workers who suffered work-related accidents receive only the barest benefits like burial expenses from the companies.
Hanjin has at present more than 10,000 workers at their jobsite in Subic area for the construction of ocean-vessels.
Gan noted that these workers are receiving only minimum wage salaries and are only working on temporary status disallowing them to have benefits just like what permanent employees are getting namely: vacation and sick leave, life insurance, and medical benefits.
The group added that the Labor department should concentrate on the enforcement of labor laws and international standards for multinational companies for the protection of the Filipino workers. (FP/Sunnex)
