Big names to join Int'l Open Chess tilt in Subic

The biggest names in chess are slated to compete in the twin-tournament Philippine International Open Chess Championship that will start Wednesday, May 7, at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center in Olongapo City.

The tournament, organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) and supported by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), will be attended by players from Iran, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and China.

Reports said that some players have already arrived for the competition, including GMs Ehsna Ghaem Maghami (ELO 2604) and Mahjoob Morteza (ELO 2488) of Iran, GM Li Chao (ELO 2581) of China; GMs Le Quang Liem (ELO 2568), Nguyen Anh Dung (ELO 2512) and Dao Thien Hai (ELO 2502O of Vietnam; GM Susanto Megaranto (EWLO 2561) of Indonesia; and GM Zaw Win Lay (ELO 2574) of Myanmar.

Newly-crowned “Battle of GMs” champion Wesley So will lead the local challenge, along with GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. and returnee GM Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor; IMs Julio Catalino Sadorra, Richard Bitoon, Barlo Nadera, Ronald Bancod, Chito Garma, and John Paul Gomez; and NMs Oliver Barbosa, Rolando Nolte, Mirabeau Maga, Adrian Pacis and Emmanuel Senador.

The tournament set to start at 3 p.m. will be opened by NCFP president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, secretary-general and Tagaytay Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and other NCFP officials.

The tournament is divided into two events.

The tournament slated from May 7-14, is the second Philippine Open, while the May 16-23 event is the third Philippine Open.

A total of $42,000 will be given out to the winners of this year’s twin tournaments.

The champion in the second Philippine Open will be awarded with $6,000 while the grand winner in the third Philippine Open stands to get $5,000.

The runner-up in the second Philippine Open will receive $5,000, while $4,000 goes to the third placer.

The third Philippine Open’s runner-up and third placer will win $4,000 and $3,000, respectively.

Other cash prizes are as follows, $3,000 for the fourth placer, $2,000 for the fifth placer, $1,500 for the sixth placer; $1,300 for the seventh placer; $1,200 for the eighth placer; and $1,000 for the ninth to 14th placers.

The 15th placers up to the 32nd placers will also receive cash prizes from the NCFP. ABS-CBN NEWS
