Gordon cites Barbers’ accomplishments
SENATOR Richard J. Gordon has denied involvement in the dismissal of Robert Dean Barbers as Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) general manager.
Gordon said that although he had criticized the PTA for its losses, he had commended the performance and administration of Barbers.
“I remember when I was still the DOT (Department of Tourism) Secretary, even though I would sometimes admonish him, I remained as a believer in his capabilities and potentials. Pinapagalitan ko ‘yan pero mahal ko ang batang ‘yan, marami siyang nagawa at isa sa ginawa niya ay dinudumog ngayon. He should be congratulated for that,” Gordon said.
Gordon cited the Oceanarium as one of the accomplishments of Barbers that attracts a significant number of tourists.
“The Oceanarium is a great example of tourism development that contributes to President Arroyo’s vision of a strong republic. This is how we envisioned the WOW Philippines program which contributed to the success of tourism industry in the country and Barbers has worked quietly also for the success of the Manila Ocean Park,” Gordon said.
Gordon congratulated Barbers as general manager of the PTA after transforming the “gargantuan white elephant into an effective working government agency.”
The PTA under Barbers improved its management and marketing, enabling the agency to have a surplus income of P40.368 million in 2007 from P25.947 million in 2002.
This sterling achievement of Barbers was recognized by the Commission on Audit (CoA) through a published report on government-owned and -controlled corporation’s top performers.
The PTA received the “Pro-Active Programs Achievement Award,” the first time a government agency received such award.
Another award accorded to Barbers was the SKAL Special Citation Awardee of the Year for Tourism in recognition of his achievements and brilliant contributions for the local tourism industry. Journal online
