Subic cop denies harassment vs journalist
OLONGAPO CITY, Philippines - Subic policemen on Friday denied harassing a broadcast reporter, saying that all they wanted was to "see his identification card and confirm his identity."
This was the reply of the Subic law enforcement officials against charges that they harassed an ABS-CBN reporter taking video footage of their office for a follow-up story on the P4.2 billion drug haul last week.
In an interview, Vicente Tolentino, acting head of the Freeport’s law enforcement group, confirmed that he approached Tumbado to ask for his identification card to confirm is he was connected with ABS-CBN.
“Narinig ko kasi sumisigaw siya kaya nilapitan ko. Pero hindi totoo na sinaktan siya o pinagbantaan siya," he said.
He also denied that he and his men harassed and manhandled Jefferson Tumbado. “We were just doing our job. It was a sensitive case that everyone needed to be checked out," Tolentino clarified, saying that only two challenged the reporter and that none of his men tried to draw a gun.
Tumbado this morning filed grave oral defamation and grave threats charges against Tolentino, two other men identified as Viray and Ronald before the Olongapo City Prosecutor’s office.
He stressed that when Tumbado showed his Pilipino Star press card, that was the end of it and “he also left the area."
“Kasi kilala ko talaga ang pangalang Tumbado, alam ko writer ng tabloid (paper) pero hindi ko kilala sa mukha," he explained.
Earlier, the local chapter of the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines (NUJP) condemned the actions of the law enforcers who “were given ample opportunity to verify Tumbado’s identity and affiliation, but they refused to do so and did not recognize the constitutionally-protected rights of journalists to report the news."
Tolentino said that they will answer all charges but was open to forgiving Tumbado for the damages he has done. - GMANews.TV
