PAWIKAN RESCUE

A sea-turtle or ‘pawikan’ was found lying on the shores of Driftwood beach on September 9, 2008. Concerned citizens noticed that the pawikan was visibly weak and had several tumors on its body so they immediately referred the turtle to city authorities for prompt treatment.

According to City Veterinarian Arnold Lopez, the pawikan has ‘fibropapilloma tumors’ on its neck and fins.

Lopez said the pawikan has a low chance of survival prompting Olongapo City Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. to immediately refer the turtle to Ocean Adventure. The marine park and sanctuary has the proper facilities needed to take care of the pawikan.

According to Lopez, samples may be taken from the sick pawikan before it is euthanized to prevent the spread of the disease to other pawikans and marine life.

It can be recalled that on June, Mayor Gordon released thirty one (31) newly hatched pawikans into the sea after sixty four (64) sea turtle eggs were found in Halfmoon Beach at Brgy. Kalaklan, Olongapo City.

Rescuers from the Disaster Management Office (DMO) with concerned citizens during the rescue of the sea turtle or ‘pawikan’ found dying in Driftwood beach on September 9, 2008. Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. immediately ordered to exert all possible efforts to save the turtle
