Toxic Waste Left in Former U.S. Military Bases - Subic and Clark

After World War II, the United States set up the Clark and Subic military bases in the Philippines. They were the largest US bases in the pacific. The bases were closed in the early 90’s.

People who live and work there now allege the United States left behind enormous amounts of toxic waste that contaminate the water supply and plague local inhabitants.

The Philippines government, a U.S. ally, has done little to address the environmental and health problems at Clark and Subic. The U.S. government acknowledged the problem but maintains it’s not legally bound to clean up the contamination.

Myra Baldonado is President of Alliance for Bases Cleanup. I spoke with her about her efforts to force the U.S. to do something about toxic waste at Clark and Subic.
