MSMEs RECEIVE HELP FROM DOST
DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro focused on the help that the government is giving to alleviate the impact of the global economic crisis on Filipinos during her keynote message in the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Department of Science and Technology (DOST) South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair in Olongapo City Convention Center (OCCC) on November 12, 2008.
“This event occurs at a very difficult time where the global economic crisis is foremost in everyone’s mind,” said Secretary Alabastro. “President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has convened the cabinet several times to discuss programs that can be put in place to provide livelihood and employment opportunities for Filipinos especially those who may be affected by the downturn of the economies of the countries.”
“In this undertaking, we are putting community based facilities in economically depressed areas to encourage household and micro-enterprises to engage in activities ventures that can provide additional incomes,” explained Secretary Alabastro. “This will be an expansion of the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP) which have been implementing in 2002.”
“SET-UP aims to enhance the competitiveness of micro and small medium scale (MSMEs) enterprises through technological interventions such as testing of products for compliance to international standards, testing and calibration services, packaging and maintenance services and consultation services. In 2007 alone, we have assisted through SET-UP more than 15,000 MSMEs,” Secretary Alabastro added.
In Olongapo City, Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. has continuously been supporting the livelihood sector of the city through the Livelihood and Cooperative Development Office (LCDO) and Gawang Gapo product exhibits in the lobby of the Olongapo City Hall where a proudly Olongapo made product is exhibited for one week.
Livelihood seminars are also continuously given by the LCDO in line with Mayor Gordon’s livelihood program. Seminars and trainings include Basic Massage and Therapy, and Dimsum Making Seminar.
The South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair will be held until November 14, 2008 where different products made by MSMEs around the country are exhibited. The exhibit includes ‘Gawang Gapo’ products, accessories and other materials made in Serpentite, a rare rock found especially in Zambales, and other agricultural products made in the different regions around the country.
