Traveling Science Centrum is in Olongapo City

The City Government of Olongapo and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Olongapo-Zambales Office are inviting everyone to visit the Science Centrum, the first interactive museum in the country, at Sam’s Pizza Playland from November 4 to December 4, 2009.

A traveling exhibition of the Philippine Science Centrum, said interactive museum aims to promote better understanding of science and technology, especially for kids and students.

Among the featured exhibits that kids can enjoy are the Anti-Gravity Mirror, Amazing Cake, Animal Sounds, Bernoulli Blower, Bicycle Wheel Gyro, Bird in a Cage, Calypso Reef, Changing Colors, Color or Words, Colored Shadows, Cyclone, Electric Fleas, Finger Tingler, Frozen Shadows, Gravity Well, Jacob’s Ladder, Laser Display, Look into Infinity, Magnetic field, Momentum Machine, Money Detector, Musical pipes, Optic Land, Pedal generator, Plasma Sphere, Pupil of the Eye, Radiometer, Rainbow Curtain, Ring Bubbles, Rope Puzzles, Shoot the ball, Subjective Shapes, Symmetroscope, Talk and Listen, Thompson ring, Tiny Bubbles, Whirlpool, You and Me Are One and the Zoetrope interactive.

“This Science Centrum will help children to understand and at the same time enjoy and explore the wonders and application of science,” said Mayor James “Bong” Gordon Jr.

BACCALAUREATE SCHOLARSHIP FOR OFW DEPENDENTS

“ Because the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW’s) are our modern-day heroes, bringing in dollar revenues that elevate the economic status of the nation and sacrificing and working hard to fend for their families, their dependents deserve no less than the best assistance the government could provide,” said Mayor James Gordon Jr. in connection with the EDSP project of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The EDSP or Education for Development Scholarship Program is a financial subsidy for the immediate dependents of active OFW’s who intend to pursue courses leading to baccalaureate degrees or four-year courses. Scholarship privileges include allowance and tuition and other school fees amounting to P 30,000.00.

Possible awardees will be selected on the basis of their performance in the National Examination administered by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Science Education Institute.

Limited to one scholarship grant per OFW family, applicant must:

a. Be a child of an active OFW below 21 years of age
b. Be a Filipino citizen and with no pending application for citizenship in any country and does not have dual citizenship
c. Be of good moral character
d. Have not earned units in any post secondary/undergraduate course
e. Be a high graduate
f. Not be a recipient of any scholarship grant

Olongapo applicants will be referred by the Olongapo City Public Employment Service Office (PESO) to DOLE and deadline of submission of application and documentary requirements will be on August 31, 2009.

REFERENCE MATERIALS FROM DOST

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Zambales Office turned over several reference materials in CD form to the Livelihood and Cooperative Development Office (LCDO) of Olongapo City on November 17, 2008 during the flag-raising ceremony at the Rizal Triangle Multi-Purpose Center.

Salvador Espiritu of the DOST Zambales Office turned over the materials to Olongapo City Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. and LCDO chief Aileen Sanchez.

The reference materials contain pertinent information that can help the local Micro-Small and Medium Enterprise flourish and turn into a sturdier industry.

Topics include: ‘Goat Raising’, ‘How to put your business online’, and ‘Wedding Giveaways’.

“Ito ang push natin para sa ating livelihood sector. Ito ay para sa lahat ng gustong magtayo ng kanilang business o sinomang interesado na palakasin pa ang kanilang mga business ventures,” said Mayor Gordon.

2008 DOST SOUTH LUZON S&T FAIR OPENS!

The 2008 Department of Science and Technology (DOST) South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair has opened on November 12, 2008 at the Olongapo City Convention Center. As part of the opening, a Ribbon Cutting ceremony was led by Secretary Estrella Alabastro, Olongapo City Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr., Zambales Governor Amor Deloso, DOST Asec Carol Yorobe and other DOST South Luzon Regional Directors .

After the opening program, Secretary Alabastro delivereed a keynote message. Mayor Gordon and Govenor Deloso also gave their respective messages regarding the development of Science and Technology in their repective areas.

“I am happy to be here and host this affair,” said Mayor Gordon. “Libre ko nang ipinagamit ang Olongapo City Convention Center because I fully support this undertaking by the DOST. For a long time, since the US Bases, walang product ang Olongapo City and now I am proud to say na ang Gawang Gapo ay mayroong over 94 products in development dahil na rin sa tulong ng iba’t ibang sektor lalo na ang DOST.”

“We should push our products and make them more marketable. In order to make these products marketable, we need to apply more research and development,” Mayor Gordon added.

The S&T fair exhibit drew some 55 participants who set-up booths showcasing products from all over the country as well as research and development offered by DOST agencies and other academic sectors.

“Napakahalaga ng research and development sa ating Medium and Small Enterprises kaya dapat i-apply natin ang mga ito to make Philippine products more competitive in the global market,” said Mayor Gordon.

The DOST S&T Fair will run until November 14, 2008. No entrance fee and everyone is invited to take part in this innovative program by the DOST.

The event is organized by DOST Regions III, NCR, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA and V with TAPI and Olongapo City Local Government Unit.

MSMEs RECEIVE HELP FROM DOST

DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro focused on the help that the government is giving to alleviate the impact of the global economic crisis on Filipinos during her keynote message in the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Department of Science and Technology (DOST) South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair in Olongapo City Convention Center (OCCC) on November 12, 2008.

“This event occurs at a very difficult time where the global economic crisis is foremost in everyone’s mind,” said Secretary Alabastro. “President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has convened the cabinet several times to discuss programs that can be put in place to provide livelihood and employment opportunities for Filipinos especially those who may be affected by the downturn of the economies of the countries.”

“In this undertaking, we are putting community based facilities in economically depressed areas to encourage household and micro-enterprises to engage in activities ventures that can provide additional incomes,” explained Secretary Alabastro. “This will be an expansion of the Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SET-UP) which have been implementing in 2002.”

“SET-UP aims to enhance the competitiveness of micro and small medium scale (MSMEs) enterprises through technological interventions such as testing of products for compliance to international standards, testing and calibration services, packaging and maintenance services and consultation services. In 2007 alone, we have assisted through SET-UP more than 15,000 MSMEs,” Secretary Alabastro added.

In Olongapo City, Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. has continuously been supporting the livelihood sector of the city through the Livelihood and Cooperative Development Office (LCDO) and Gawang Gapo product exhibits in the lobby of the Olongapo City Hall where a proudly Olongapo made product is exhibited for one week.

Livelihood seminars are also continuously given by the LCDO in line with Mayor Gordon’s livelihood program. Seminars and trainings include Basic Massage and Therapy, and Dimsum Making Seminar.

The South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair will be held until November 14, 2008 where different products made by MSMEs around the country are exhibited. The exhibit includes ‘Gawang Gapo’ products, accessories and other materials made in Serpentite, a rare rock found especially in Zambales, and other agricultural products made in the different regions around the country.

DOST SOUTH LUZON CLUSTER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FAIR

It’s all systems go for the upcoming 2008 Department of Science and Technology (DOST) South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology fair on November 11 to 14, 2008 at the Olongapo City Convention Center (OCCC).

Olongapo City Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. is encouraging everyone to view the exhibit of the latest scientific and technological breakthroughs developed by government and private research and academic institutions, especially those that will benefit the city’s Small and Medium Enterprises.

“Napakalaki ng pasasalamat ng lungsod sa DOST dahil sa kanilang patuloy na pagsuporta sa lungsod lalo na sa mga donations na ibinibigay nila sa ating livelihood sector,” said Mayor Gordon.

The exhibit is open from November 11 to 14, 2008, 8am-6pm at the OCCC Plenary Hall. No entrance fee.

It can be recalled that the DOST recently donated several peeling machines and also gave support funds to the city’s livelihood ventures.

During the opening ceremonies on November 12, 2008 at the OCCC, DOST Regional Director Dr. Teresita Fortuna will grace the activities with DOST III Regional Director Dr. Conrado Oliveros and other DOST South Luzon Regional Directors and DOST-TAPI Directors.

The ribbon cutting ceremony and opening of exhibits will be held on November 12, 2008 at the Plenary Hall A & B of OCCC.

Mayor Gordon will be delivering the Welcome Address during the Opening Ceremonies.

A Press Conference will be held after the opening ceremonies at the Function Room of OCCC from 10am to 12pm

Several techno forums will also be held such as forum on Waste Management, Intellectual Property Rights, and Renewable and Alternative Energy.

Daily science trivia contests will be held during the entire duration of the exhibit.

2008 SOUTH LUZON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FAIR IN ‘GAPO!

Olongapo City will be hosting the 2008 South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair which will be held on November 8 to 15 2008. This event is part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The opening ceremonies will be on November 12, 2008 at the Olongapo City Convention Center Plenary Hall A and B. DOST Secretary Estrella Alabastro and Olongapo City Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr. will grace the said event.

“Sa buong Science and Technology Fair ay magkakaroon ng iba’t-ibang mga activities katulad ng Techno forums like Seminars on Nutrition and Food Safety for Hotel/Restaurant/Hotel Operators, Latest trend in Packaging and Labeling, Renewable and Alternative Energy, at Waste Management,” said DOST Provincial Director Bernardita Montevirgen.

“Magkakaroon din ng Fellowship night on November 12 at By The Sea Resort. Different contests like Science trivia and poster making contests will also be held,” Montevirgen added.

Mayor Gordon is continuously supporting the programs and activities of DOST, in line with his desires to update the technologies being practiced in the city.

“Napakaganda ng programa na ito, hindi lamang para sa bata kung hindi para sa lahat. Kailangan makita natin ito lalo na yung sa livelihood sector dahil ipapakita dito yung mga latest research and developments para sa small and medium enterprises,” Mayor Gordon said.

LCDO RECEIVES DONATION FROM DOST

The Livelihood and Cooperative Development Office (LCDO) recently received a P128,600 donation from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as support to Mayor James “Bong’ Gordon Jr.’s livelihood projects for Olongapeños.

The donation will primarily be used to upgrade the packaging and library resource capability of LCDO. This is also part of Mayor Gordon’s program to further advance the livelihood sector of the city.

“Maraming salamat sa DOST! Thank you for supporting Olongapo City at dahil sa kanila nagiging successful tayo,” Mayor Gordon said.

“Maraming beses na rin tayong natulungan ng DOST katulad nung binigyan nila tayo ng multi-purpose drying machine. Dahil diyan, nasusuportahan ang mga products natin,” Mayor Gordon added.

Meanwhile, in celebration of DOST’s Golden Anniversary, a 2008 South Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair will be held from November 12 to 14, 2008 at the Olongapo City Convention Center.

“The activity will showcase the best DOST programs and services. Lahat tayo ay invited to see this exhibit,” Mayor Gordon said.

The Science Fair will be holding different activities throughout the event such as forums and quiz bees.
